Playa Amadores on Gran Canaria, which is located farther towards Mogan, has been the labelled the ´new´ Puerto Rico. A 400m long artificial beach with sand from the Caribbean has been constructed, and a lovely promenade with shops and restaurants overlooks the beach. You can walk from the ´old harbour´ in Puerto Rico to Amadores on a man-made path that has been mounted on the rocks below the road – colloquially known as ´The Great Wall of China, but on Gran Canaria.

The ´old´ beach of Puerto Rico - Gran Canaria is very popular, and restaurants and mini markets are close by and you are allowed to enter in your swimwear without being frowned upon. The new beach – Amadores – is located closer to Puerto de Mogan and you can reach it by car or on foot along `The Great Wall of China´, which is a path that runs from the old harbour in Puerto Rico. The path has been constructed below the road, so you will not come in contact with traffic; however, the walk is longer than first anticipated.
This beach is not that old and, as it is man-made, variations in depth may occur, so watch out for sudden changes in water depth! There are plenty of opportunities to spend money here, but watch out for pickpockets that tend to help themselves to your money.
Diving in Puerto Rico on Gran Canaria is a chapter all to himself, for beginners and more experienced. On the "old" port is a Padi Dive Centre, and they speak several languages, so there are no misunderstandings. Here you will find different types of dives, so whatever you want to see below the sea surface over, here is opportunity. If you have no license, but good to try to breathe under the surface, you can make a test dive, where after a thorough instructions are followed into an exciting world, and you have all the time due to an experienced instructor. Once you have been on such a drive, there are not many who drop out.
There are many different boat trips from Puerto Rico – Gran Canaria with sailing or motorized boats - so there should be something for everyone. They all depart more or less at the same time, have the same destination, serve the same food, and return in the afternoon.
There are two types of sailing boats: the old pirate ship made of wood and a modern fibreglass boat. Yachtsmen know what is preferred. There are several motorized boats; however, we do recommend the smaller boats as the atmosphere on here is cosier and you meet new people, whereas the larger boats are boarded by 250 guests or more – however, you are still able to enjoy the trip.
In addition, you are able to book a private boat trip which allows you to decide what you want to do during the hours that you have paid for. If you are travelling as part of group, this is a good way to spend a day – but remember to book it in advance.
A good idea is to walk around on the harbour, when the various boats return, and soak up the atmosphere of the returning tourists. This allows you to select the boat trip that meets your needs. However, all boat trips have one thing in common – you have to be careful of the sun as you might easily burn as the sun is strong on the ocean, even though it might be cloudy.
Puerto Rico is the place to be if you want to relax. The beach is small, but it does not matter as there is plenty of sand, the Atlantic water is calm, the sun shines 300 days a year, and the shops and restaurants are not far away. Most of the boat trips depart from Puerto Rico and the two harbours open up a ´sea´ of opportunities to have fun above and below the waves.
Puerto Rico is blessed with loads of restaurants, bars and different shops, thus you have everything that you need on an R&R holiday within walking distance. The four shopping centres offer everything you would want on a good holiday – during the day and at night.
A lot of Danes view Puerto Rico as their home away from home, and, during the cold winter months, Danish is spoken more often than Spanish.
