All the markets in the southern part of Gran Canaria have a lot of colourful stands that sell the same items as shops and, in most cases, you will encounter the same individuals. A lot of tourists visit these markets to ooze up the atmosphere; however, if you attend them to make a good deal, you will be disappointed. Nonetheless these markets are worth a visit, but remember to only bring the amount money you can afford to use. At markets, a lot of pickpockets are at work and they are very skilled – and Gran Canaria is no different (Remember to wear your rucksack on the front).
There are also several local markets where you are able to buy homemade and home-grown products – these are not subjected to any regulations. However, this has no effect on product quality. You will not find fresher fruit, vegetables or home baked goods at this price level anywhere else, and you can also buy homemade wine and cheese. At some markets, you will come across homemade crafts, children´s clothing, footwear and much more.
Such a market is located in San Mateo – not far from Telde. This market is on every Saturday and Sunday and has been arranged in a fashion in which you can only buy groceries on Saturdays; however, on Sundays, you can also purchase embroideries, needlework and crafts. In Las Palmas, the local market hall, which is located close to ´El Corte Ingles´, is open every day and here you are able to buy authentic local produce. Thus, you can wander about and find exciting items and products that you can hang on the wall or put In your mouth.
If you like the scent of a market, you should take a look at the market calendar and plan a trip to one of these buzzing places.
Happy hunting!
